Time to Shine

Public Relations Management (PRM) has been described as an art and science and even 'Designer PR' but showing others what it is PR professionals do, is not as easy as holding up a painting, conducting a science experiment or having a designer PR gown draped over a model. When you come to think about it, displaying the value of managing perceptions and building a strong brand reputation, is not the easiest thing to do. It may not be easy but never say impossible and in reality we do need to communicate our value, loudly and proudly, or have to continually explain that we are not PA's or solely event coordinators.

As Marian Pike, Senior Lecture of Media Studies, wrote in 'Designer PR', the move to the Faculty of Informatics and Design has opened many opportunities. When opportunity knocks, the best response is to open the door and grab it with both hands. The PRM department is delighted to participate in an exhibition displaying the best student work to potential employers and business partners, and invites PRM students and recent graduates to participate in creating a PR display.

"This exhibit is about getting the Faculty and our students on the map," says Munira Allie, exhibition coordinator from the Faculty of Informatics and Design. The exhibition planned for this year, is ideal for PRM students and department to meet opportunity with preparation and create our own luck. This is our chance to establish our course as the leader in PR education as well as offering students to opportunity to shine to prospective employers.

The PRM department invites PR students and recent graduates to establish themselves as PR professionals by participating in this exhibition in the following ways:

  • Submit portfolios and projects that would appeal to industry
  • Email or drop off photographs and/or videos of 'PR in action', in class, on campus and working as interns in industry
  • Volunteer to assist with the conceptualisation, exhibit design and/or the set up of the PRM display

JSE gives SA students a chance to invest a bogus R1 million

Have you ever wanted to test your skills at investing in shares on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) without running the risk of losing any money? South African learners and students will get an opportunity to do so with the 2009 JSE/Liberty Life Investment Challenge starting in March. Registrations are now open with more than R200, 000 worth of prizes waiting to be won. The Challenge offers high school learners and university students an opportunity to learn about investments through managing a virtual portfolio of a whopping
R1 million. As only the imaginary million is at risk, entrants have nothing to lose and a whole lot to gain.

The JSE/Liberty Life Investment Challenge is an ongoing annual competition that enables learners and students to become aware of the fundamentals of investment strategy, encouraging them to research and strategise issues surrounding the trading of JSE-listed shares. Tracking performance over six months, a simulated trading programme provides a real life environment for testing their share trading skills against other entrants.

For 35 years the JSE/Liberty Life Investment Challenge has been helping to educate school learners and students about the ins and outs of investing in the stock market and the larger role that such investment plays in the country’s economy with the idea of securing a better future for them. Thus it is the most focused and far-reaching educational youth programme in the South African financial sector.

“The competition exposes learners and students to a simulation of the JSE and introduces them to share trading. They are given an imaginative sum of R1 million to invest according to specified risk scenarios within which they manage their portfolios to maximize their growth. The JSE/Liberty Life Investment Challenge encourages learners to read financial publications, exposing them to a world of knowledge that will empower them not only financially but also on a personal level,” says Senior General Manager of JSE Education, Maureen Dlamini.

In addition to winning the fantastic prizes entrants will gain exposure and experience on life skills such as budgeting, research, team work and they will identify new career opportunities.

The JSE/Liberty Life Investment Challenge runs from March to September and is open to all grade 8 to 12 learners from any South African high school. Students from universities and independent colleges are also eligible to participate. All school entrants must be in teams of four and have to be supervised by a teacher or mentor. Grade 12 learners will need permission of their principal to enter. University teams must consist of a minimum of two members and a maximum of four.

Entrants have a choice of selecting one or more risk portfolios that they wish to take part in for the competition. The portfolio options are Income (low risk), Equity Growth (moderate risk) and Speculator (high risk). Teams choose the portfolio according to their level of experience and risk adversity. High risk shares and other financial instruments can result in high returns over a short period of time but at the same time have a higher probability of the share price to suddenly drop. It is therefore recommended for learners in grade 8 and 9 to participate in the Income Portfolio game as this is more suited to beginners.

Teams will receive constant guidance from their supervising teachers and mentors selected by schools. Challenge Co-ordinators at the JSE will also provide assistance on a daily basis.

From March through to September the team with the best performance for the month in each portfolio will win R500 per team member. A further R500 will be awarded to their school as well as another R500 for their teacher or mentor. At the end of the competition, five prizes amounting to R60 000 per portfolio will be awarded to the overall winners of the Income, Equity Growth and Speculator Portfolios.

Registration forms are obtainable from the JSE/Liberty Life Investment Challenge website (http://schools.jse.co.za) or from the Challenge Co-ordinators on 011 – 520 7116/ 7344/ 7168. Each team will be required to pay a registration fee of R120 per team per portfolio entered. Also refer to the website for more details.

Painting the Town Red

The PRM staff and lecturers showed that 'FRIDAY THE 13th' could not scare off a good PR professional! We celebrated it in style by supporting Dress Red, the fundraiser in aid of the Heart and Stroke Foundation SA (HSFSA). Here are some photos from the day... the good, bad and all red!

Joao Alberts ( PA to the head of department), Monique Boucher (of STREAMLINE) and Prof. Johann van der Merwe, the funniest Head of Department at CPUT.

Ayesha Toyer, Junior Lecturer: Public Relations and Communication Science.

Lauren Dyers (PR Assistant/intern in the PRM department) and Monique Boucher.

Ayesha Toyer spoiled everyone with a Valentine's gift (yummy chocolate). Ayesha, you are such a sweetie!

Monique Boucher and Azra Dawood (Graduate Assistant and B Tech PR student) both worked at the HSFSA during their PR internship.

Unfortunately Thabisa Nondzube, Junior Lecturer: End-User Computing and Marketing & Advertising for PR, dashed off to class before we could get a photograph of her. She was dressed from head to toe in red (including the nail polish). Thanks to the other Dress Red supporters: the camera-shy Marian Pike, Senior Lecturer: Media Studies, Rifqah Abrahams, Junior Lecturer: Media Studies, and Elza Myburgh, Lecturer: Communications Science 3 and English, who wore her Dress Red Sticker proudly.

Next year we hope that more staff members and students would show their support, find something red and donate R 5 to fighting heart disease.

Streamlining PR Expertise

The Media Studies Office has launched STREAMLINE, a PR agency within the Public Relations Management (PRM) Department, right here at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT). It is a new concept for the department but right on the mark with the trend to integrate education with industry practices.

Nick Lucido, a third year public relations student at Michigan State University and blogger, wrote his predictions for Public Relations in 2009 in his personal blog “PR Start”. He believes, that amongst the PR buzzwords for this year, “…combining theory with practical experience” is, in his words, “the name of the game for successful PR education.”

The PRM three-year national diploma has long been the preferred PR qualification due to the practical third year internship in which students are sent into industry for a eight to twelve months. It is the reason why I chose to study PR at CPUT and this course was recommended, over other PR courses. I am proud to have completed my B Tech Degree and had the opportunity to gain well-rounded experience as a PR intern at the Heart and Stroke Foundation SA.

When I first read Uno de Waal’s blog post WebPR isn’t PR and PR isn’t WebPR in 2007, I believe he hit the mark when he wrote: “… PR companies and places like CPUT that offer courses in PR …have no idea what’s cooking online…It takes ages for a field of study to actually reach a proper maturity that it can be presented. And with things online it moves so fast that by the time you start a subject course, the material would be old by the time you finish it. So it is difficult for PR companies to stay up to date with what’s happening online.”

This is where STREAMLINE fits in. STREAMLINE is the bridge between PR, the academic study, and the practical, trend-watching, adaptation to and creation of new communication tools, which is PR in practice and engaged in online media. It is our philosophy to follow industry trends particularly that of the social media explosion, feeding what we learn on the job back to the staff and students of the PR department.

STREAMLINE manages the social media for the department of Public Relations Management, is available to assist the Faculty of Informatics and Design and takes on socially responsible projects in alignment with CPUT’s Social Responsibility Index (SRI) and community development.

Patience in a Virtue…

… And virtue is a grace. Thank you to all the PR students for having patience with the timetables, which are currently being updated. I have been a student and know it can be frustrating it can be to get a class at the time wrong or come in too early. The PR department is working on the timetables to ensure that you have class in venues that accommodate the class numbers and ensure no clashes.

If you happen to come in to university too early here are some very productive ways to keep yourself busy:

Visit the Library
Get acquainted with the PR journals and books in the library, you are going to need these! I have never found such a good selection of PR and marketing books in any other public library (or even at local bookshops) so take advantage of these resources while you are able to.

Surf the Net
Go online and look for PR related websites and blogs and find out what is happening in the PR industry, locally and globally. The PR/Communications industry as moving fast and furiously as communication technology is. The more you know the better, not only for class discussion and assignments, but for the sake of your successful career in PR.

Visit our Blogroll and follow PR Chatbox on Twitter to find out what we are following, reading and researching.

Sportingly Good
Visit the Multipurpose Hall, ask for the Sports Department (it is on the second level) and find out about sport teams and activities you could join. Sport is good for your body, great for your social life and will help you keep the first year pounds at bay!

Accounting for Public Relations

Lauren Dyers, PR intern in the PRM department, spoke to Michelle Barnes, Accounting for PR lecturer, to find out more about this new dynamic first year subject.

“Accounting is a valuable and beneficial subject to have as every business person needs to understand how a business operates,” said Barnes. She pointed out that accounting is important not only for PR, but in all aspects of establishing a successful career.

First years will be introduced the all the basics of accounting, giving them a broad overview into the world of finance.
“Accounting equips students with a variety of skills that will play a role in their future occupations as successful employees,” said Barnes.

The Public Relations Management department is proud to be able to offer students subjects that will best equip them to meet the needs of industry including budgetary control, something PR agencies require graduates to be able to implement.

Please note that Accounting for PR will start from next week, February, 9.
